I’ve been working on a healthy cream cheese frosting recipe for a while, because I really wanted a healthier option for frosting cakes or cupcakes.
Instead of cups upon cups of powdered sugar, this healthy cream cheese frosting is sweetened naturally with just 1/4 cup of raw honey. A touch of vanilla adds some depth to the flavor, and a little bit of milk helps make it easy to spread (and lick off the beater!).
You can use regular cream cheese (like Philadelphia) , or go for a healthier alternative with a natural full fat cream cheese full of probiotics (like Nancy’s cream cheese), or a Chèvre goat cheese. Whichever you use, make sure it is full fat and softened to room temperature.
We love using this healthy cream cheese frosting to top off our healthy carrot cake recipe! What would you use it with?

We love you frosting recipe. It gave us a good idea and then my hubby modified it a little more by using vanilla yogurt instead of the vanilla extract and milk. We also cut back on the honey to 1 tsp. The yogurt is so sweet with sugar already. It worked wonderfully well. I loved the flavor and the fact that it was healthy.
Hi there
I see the recipe for the healthy cream cheese frosting is no longer on the website. Please please share it wth me! I make it often but cant recall quantities
Carla
Hi Carla, I’m freaking out! Our recipe card plug in broke the site so we had to switch to a different one. Don’t know why that recipe didn’t transfer over. Working on figuring it out and will email you when we get it back!
This is healthier and tastes nice. However, mine turned out clumpy. Any ideas of why and how to prevent that in the future?
So sorry that happened Kristen! Make sure your cream cheese is full fat and totally at room temperature. The clumps typically come from cold bits of cream cheese that don’t whip up, but can also happen with stabilizers and corn additional ingredients in low fat or fat free cream cheese. Hope that helps!
Can I substitute the honey with something? Like maple syrup, would it work? I would like to use your recipe for my baby smash cake and haven’t introduced honey to her yet .
Thanks
You can! Honey is sweeter than maple syrup, and it will have a stronger maple taste. You could also try agave syrup. I would just add a bit at a time until you get a sweetness that you like.
